Reading at Redstart

We are passionate about reading at Redstart and, because we know how important it is to the children's overall development, we work really hard to encourage children to love and enjoy their reading.

Early Reading at Redstart

In EYFS and Year 1 we teach reading through a well-sequenced, research-proven phonic based approach called the Read, Write, Inc system The children have daily phonic sessions in small, flexible groups to learn sounds and how to blend. Teachers also listen to children read individually and books based on the sounds they learn in class are sent home to be read with parents.

In addition, we foster a love of reading through regularly sharing and reading books to the class and creating opportunities to immerse the children in stories- please do discuss with your child's teacher if you have any questions about how you could help to build on this love for reading at home too.

Both Nursery and Reception teachers plan the children's learning through using an engaging book which allows further immersion into quality children's literature.

Reading in Years 2-6

It is important to note that once your child can read the excitement really starts and this is just the beginning of an exciting journey into the world of books and enrichment. Even when they can read independently, there are a whole host of activities we can undertake with our children to promote an understanding of what they are reading. At The Redstart School, we use Accelerated Reader to support children with appropriate choice of book and as a method to check and promote understanding. We have recently bought lots of new books and further developed our reading areas so children have places to read their books.
