Reading at Redstart
We are passionate about reading at Redstart and, because we know how important it is to the children's overall development, we work really hard to encourage children to love and enjoy their reading.
Here is some information about how reading is monitored by the class teachers in years 2-6.
It is important to note that once your child can 'Read' the excitement really starts and this is just the beginning of an exciting journey into the world of books and enrichment. Even when they can read independently, there are a whole host of activities we can undertake with our children to promote an understanding of what they are reading.
Before the children are ready to be on the AR system, typically in year One and EYFS, we teach reading through a phonic based approach. The children have daily phonic sessions in small groups to learn sounds and how to blend. Teachers also listen to children read individually and books are sent home to be read with parents. We foster a love of reading through regularly sharing and reading books to the class and creating opportunities to immerse the children in stories- please do discuss with your child's teacher if you have any questions about how you could help to build on this love for reading at home too.
