Our Teaching School Alliance
In November 2015 The Redstart Primary School in Chard, Somerset became the second primary school in Somerset to be designated as a Teaching School and is also a National Support School. This status allows us to offer professional development to schools in the area, as well as providing high quality training for our own staff.
Introduced in 2011, Teaching Schools are carefully selected from Ofsted rated “outstanding" schools. They work with partner schools in an alliance to ensure high quality school-led initial teacher training and professional development opportunities for teachers at all stages of their career. They take a leading role in recruiting and training new entrants to the profession, identifying leadership potential and providing support for other schools, not least by exemplifying excellent standards of teaching.

The Redstart Teaching Alliance (RTA) is currently working with a collaboration of over 20 primary, secondary, middle schools and partners across Somerset, Devon and Dorset to provide high-quality training and development to new and existing staff. In response to the national agenda of developing a self-improving school system, the partner schools within the Alliance have come together to lead a framework of training, research and professional development for the benefit of all schools across the area and within the alliance.
The Redstart Teaching Alliance has established itself as a reputable teaching school. Our vision is to work together to raise standards and make a positive difference to the quality of our learners’ learning experiences and achievements and to develop leadership potential. We aim to sustain and promote an exceptional quality of education for the students and communities we serve. Each organisation involved shares our common ethos to deliver outstanding student outcomes and they have a proven track record of good and/or outstanding practice.
As a teaching school, we will identify, develop and co-ordinate expertise for the benefit of pupils across a network of schools, resulting in:
- better results for pupils
- fewer poorly performing schools
- more good and outstanding schools
- a self-improving and sustainable system
Our Alliance Partners
The Alliance is well placed to deliver the demands of the Teaching School initiative. The Redstart Teaching Alliance works with a range of primary, middle and secondary schools to develop and promote the best practices in training and pedagogy. One of the main aims of a Teaching School is to work together as a group of schools and other partners that are supported by the leadership of the lead Teaching School.
A few comments from our alliance members:
Paul Rushforth, CEO, WSAT - 'Being part of Redstart Teaching Alliance has opened up a world of opportunities for tailored professional development. It is great to work with like minded, values driven professionals.'
Headteacher at Charmouth Primary School - 'The Redstart Teaching Alliance provides rigorous and structured support for areas of school improvement. The staff are very generous of their time and are proud to be able to support and
help colleagues improve their practice. It is very beneficial to be part of
the alliance as consistent outstanding practice can be disseminated and staff
get to know each other across the schools.'
