Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs)

Specialist leaders of education

Specialist leaders of education (SLEs) are outstanding middle and senior leaders. They have at least 2 years’ leadership experience in a particular specialism (e.g. maths, school business management, initial teacher training).

Their role is to support individuals or teams in a similar position in other schools. They help others achieve outstanding leadership in their area of specialism.

The Redstart Teaching Alliance SLEs will offer a range of expertise and skills to develop leadership capacity of individuals and teams in schools, using coaching or facilitation to draw on their knowledge in specialist areas.

The RTA are really pleased to announce the recruitment of more SLEs across a range of subjects and expertise.  The SLEs are now available to come and support you in your school.  Further details are listed below.

We will begin round 5 of the SLE recruitment process in the new year.

Senior Teacher - Head of Early Years / Reception Class Teacher

King Ina Academy (Infant Site) Somerton
  • Early Years
  • The outdoor curriculum (Forest School)
  • Coaching
I have always worked in the Early Years sector and have held various roles within nurseries and primary schools. I have a passion for the Early Years Curriculum as this is where a child’s educational journey begins. I am currently one of Somerset County Councils Early Years Specialists, supporting Early Years providers throughout the county. This is a rewarding role as it allows me to coach Early Years providers that may be experiencing difficulties in an area of their work.I have also worked in a school where coaching was beneficial for the development of the staff. I am a trained coach and use this technique in my work with other schools. This develops staff and empowers them to make their own decisions.I am also interested in developing forest school for children to experience the outdoor curriculum and the activities related to this. I am a forest school leader myself.

Roger  Hunt Class Teacher The Restart Primary School
  • Assesment
  • ITT
  • NQT development
I am currently a Year 3 teacher at Redstart Primary School. I have led a cultural change in the way teachers record and report assessment of their pupils using software I have developed called PPD (Pupil Progress Data). It is designed to save vast amounts of teacher's time whilst still providing in depth data analysis for teachers and senior leadership alike. Since the removal of levels, many teachers have found it difficult to' re-find the goalposts'. Much of my work at Redstart has been around how we form our termly and end of year ARE judgements using a range of formative and summative data. I am currently focusing on how we use marking and feedback, target setting and pupil self-evaluation  effectively.

Charlotte  Kirk Year 5 and 6 Teacher Priorswood Primary School
  • English
Before joining the Redstart Trust I taught at Swanmead Middle School for five years: four of which I spent as a senior teacher. I am hugely passionate about the teaching of English across the primary years, with a particular focus on reading which underpins every subject we teach.
I have supported teachers within my own department and in other schools on the delivery of English, looking at teaching styles, assessing pupils’ work and accessing good quality texts which are appropriate but challenging. Teaching children to develop a love of reading is one of the most challenging aspects of teaching but I believe one of the most rewarding.
Within my role at Priorswood, I have become a writing champion: this allows me time to spend with other writing champions across the Trust as well as a specialist Talk for Writing facilitator who works closely alongside Pie Corbett. I then support teachers across the whole school to deliver the process consistently and accurately.

In my current school, along with my partner Lead, I have introduced an approach to English and carried out lesson observations. l also work with all of the Teachers in our school to ensure that our teaching of English is delivered to a high level.

Over my years in education, I have taught in Years 6 and 5 as well as a mixed year group KS2 class. I have supported the development of teaching and learning for both students and established teachers. I have also been a KS2 Writing Moderator which involved not only a strong understanding of standards and the ability to moderate but also the skills to hold productive professional dialogue.

Janet Ross Computing and Maths lead. Year 6 Class Teacher West Monkton Primary School
  • ICT

I am a Year 5 teacher and Computing (and Maths) Lead at West Monkton Primary School. I believe that computing is an essential part of the curriculum and a huge part of our children's lives both now and looking to their future. Computing can be used as both a vehicle and a powerful tool to enhance teaching and learning across all subjects as well as a stand-alone skill. It encourages creativity, resilience and problem solving that can have a positive impact on all areas of learning.

I have been a Computing At Schools Master Teacher for 4 years during which time I have supported staff in developing their use of and confidence in computing. I have also spoken at numerous conferences across the South West about my use of computing across the curriculum.
